Roger Goodell to attend National Football League opener in New England

Doyle BarkerMar 30, 2017

The NFL commissioner, who hasn't been to Gillette Stadium since the a playoff game in January 2015, the same month that Deflategate started, said Tuesday night he was coming.

Speaking to reporters after adjourning the 2017 owners meeting, Goodell said he is confident the league will have a freshened policy in time for the 2017 season. He has been absent from Gillette Stadium since handing down punishment to the Patriots and Tom Brady for their alleged role in the Deflategate scandal.

The commissioner can not officially say he will be at the Patriots' first game since the schedule has not been released yet, but the Super Bowl champion nearly always hosts the kickoff game the Thursday before the first Sunday games. "He doesn't want to come here".

It's possible the Patriots will host the Falcons in a Super Bowl rematch.

Matt Patricia, the Patriots' defensive coordinator, opted to throw an overhand right at the commissioner. But I want to say to our fans, to our brilliant coaching staff, our incredible players who were so spectacular: "This is unequivocally the sweetest". He had to eat a little bit of shit when he handed the Lombardi trophy to Brady and owner Robert Kraft after the Patriots won Super Bowl LI.

Before the Super Bowl, Goodell had said, "If I am invited back to Foxborough, I'll come".

On Monday, Kraft said, "Look, he's commissioner in the league. And if he wanted to come, he's welcome to come".
