Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey departs Facebook

His inventive spirit helped kickstart the modern VR revolution and build an industry.

Palmer Luckey - the 24 year-old, meme-loving, and liberal-hating founder of Oculus VR - has officially left Facebook, which acquired his startup for more than $2 billion in 2014. "We're thankful for everything he did for Oculus and VR and wish him the best".

Luckey has been largely absent from public view for the past several months, following a Daily Beast piece revealing his involvement with the pro-Trump group Nimble America.

"Palmer will be dearly missed", an Oculus spokesperson said in a statement to TechRadar regarding Luckey's departure.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has hailed virtual reality as the next major computing platform after mobile devices. Oculus delayed the shipment of its Rift headsets, which sell for $599.

This is Palmer's final official week at Oculus, according to Facebook. A Texas jury found that Luckey failed to comply with a non-disclosure agreement and the company infringed on copyright.

We're not sure what the specific reason is, but Luckey, who helped put virtual reality on the map, will soon part ways with both Oculus and Facebook.

Whatever the nature of his departure, Luckey was certainly the face of the budding VR scene up until his sudden withdrawal from the limelight.

UploadVR first reported the news of Luckey's exit from Facebook.
