Anti-allergy medicine EpiPen recall expands to US

The Food and Drug Administration said the recall covers 13 lots distributed from December 2015 through July of 2016.

The company said there have been two global cases reported where a defective part prevented the Auto-Injector from activating.

It's not yet clear why the initial recall didn't include EpiPens sold in the United States, since the product is manufactured in St. Louis, Missouri.

The initial recall of the emergency allergy product didn't include the U.S., but Mylan issued a new recall last night which not only includes EpiPens sold in the USA, but also involves the children's version, known as EpiPen Jr.

Pfizer said it's committed to replacing the recalled devices at no cost and has advised consumers who have them to contact its information line at 1-800-463-6001.

Mylan's original March 20 recall affected about 80,000 of the EpiPen devices shipped to locations outside the United States. The company's CEO had to testify in front of Congress over the hike.

According to the recall announcement on Mylan's website, the risk of the defect is low, but the company is acting "out of an abundance of caution" to keep any defective pens out of circulation.

Mylan said it was expanding a recall of its EpiPen allergy injection to some lots of the device that have been distributed in the USA, after defects were found that could keep the injectors from working in an emergency.
