England's Dier wary of Lithuania threat

Doyle BarkerApr 07, 2017

Speaking ahead of Sunday's Group F qualifier at home to Lithuania, the England midfielder was asked if a largely young and untested group of players might peak in the finals in Russian Federation in 2018.

Dier, who played the full match in Germany, said he hadn't heard the chants but added he hoped they would not be repeated during Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley.

"We might be quite young, but I don't think we can play the age card forever".

The 29-year-old goalkeeper is now on loan at Torino after losing his place at Manchester City when Pep Guardiola arrived at the Etihad and has played 28 times for the Italian club this season.

The 29-year-old is the fourth player to skipper the team in as many matches, following Wayne Rooney, Jordan Henderson and Gary Cahill - who are unselected, injured and suspended, respectively.

"It's a good moment for him, he's playing well for his club, his performances with us have been excellent and he's respected by everybody in the group".

"For me, it was an unbelievable evening - like a movie", he said.

Hart, 29, admitted the result was a hard pill to swallow having performed so well at Signal Iduna Park, but took positives from the display.

Gareth Southgate's men will start as strong favourites at Wembley, as they look to defend their place at the Group F summit, but Dier says thoughts of Iceland will not be far away.

The goalkeeper, who is on loan at Torino from Manchester City, will lead out the Three Lions on what will be his 70th cap.

Right now, Gareth Southgate and the English national team must accept that they are behind Germany, Spain, Italy, France and Portugal in terms of tactical strength. I don't think he's eager to make everything completely different and change everything.

"I think I've always had qualities that a captain may have and I think I can do that job".

"I'm not under pressure to pick any players or do anything that isn't the right thing for a football decision".

"We know his personality and character and when you bring someone in late to the squad for a couple of days you need to know what's coming through the door".

Key Player: Dele Alli - The Spurs midfielder will be looking to have a huge impact on the game and continue his impressive season. "He has shown great maturity in the way he has recovered from his own disappointment last summer", England boss Southgate told reporters on Saturday.

"They have done a great deal of work over the last 20 years to try and address issues, particularly around disorder".
