An 8-year-old Indian girl was found living in a forest with a group of monkeys, the Times of India reports.

Officers found the girl with a pack of wild monkeys two months ago, while performing a routine patrol in the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary near the Nepalese border, authorities told the Times of India.

The girl's presence in the district hospital has evoked curiosity among the locals.

The child is reportedly feral and doesn't respond to human interaction.

India media have reported that the girl cannot speak and does not understand any language.

The Times of India writes the apparently feral child can not speak, does not appear to understand language and walks on her hands and feet. She was surrounded by three monkeys. While she can walk on two legs, she spends much of her time on all fours instead, like a monkey.

When they tried to rescue her, they were chased away by the monkeys before a policeman was later able to take her away despite being attacked himself by the animals. "She looked miserable. If we hadn't rescued her she could have been eaten by other animals".

Girl is undergoing from treatment and has shown improvement following the treatment but the improvement has been very slow. The doctors who are treating her said that she gets violent frequently, however, she has now better and is showing signs of improvement.

Her "Mowgli" nickname comes from its similarities to "Jungle Book" - a story by Rudyard Kipling about a young boy with the same name who was raised by wolves.
