Guest Editorial…Sexual harassment problems at Fox News

Smith criticized President Donald Trump for defending Fox News host Bill O'Reilly from new allegations of sexual harassment.

Trump in an interview with New York Times, disapproved of settlements paid to the women saying O'Reilly din't do anything wrong.

The president's remarks come days after the Times revealed that O'Reilly, Fox News and parent company 21st Century Fox had paid a total of $13 million in settlements to five women who accused him of sexual harassment or verbal abuse.

Some of the companies that abandoned O'Reilly issued strongly worded statements that may be hard to explain if they return, said Angelo Carusone, president of the liberal watchdog Media Matters.

In a Wednesday interview with the newspaper, Trump came to O'Reilly's defense, calling him "a good person". He told the Times: "You should have taken it all the way".

I don't know Bill personally, however, I did make two prominent appearances on his television show, the second of which is regrettably the only time I have ever gone on television to "spin" - which is kind of hilarious given the show's "No Spin Zone" nickname.

More advertisers fled Bill O'Reilly's show on Wednesday, with drugmaker Pfizer and real estate company Coldwell Banker among the latest to distance themselves.

Fox News had the highest ratings of any cable news network past year and 14 of the 15 most popular shows on cable news. The parent company has said O'Reilly denies the allegations.

Former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson has a warning for women dealing with sexual harassment at work. But while the advertisers' moves may send a strong signal to consumers, so far, it is unclear whether there will be any long-term negative impact on either Fox News or "The O'Reilly Factor".

The Jenny Craig defection shows how dire the situation has become for Fox News.

"Susan Rice is a criminal and O'Reilly should not have settled", she said. On Tuesday, his program averaged 3.8 million viewers, according to Nielsen data.

"Advertisers are very risk averse", said Larry Chiagouris, a Pace University marketing professor. "In my more than 20 years at Fox News Channel, no one has ever filed a complaint about me with the Human Resources Department, even on the anonymous hotline".

Her lawsuit, filed Monday, says a promised position on the Fox show "The Five" never happened after she rejected Ailes' sexual advances.
