Bangladesh PM meets Indian opposition leader Sonia Gandhi

"Laykin electricity milaa achha hai kutch toh mila naa (we asked for water, she gave us power but at least we got something)" Hasina said.

NEW DELHI:It was a day on which two political veterans - one from Bangladesh and another from India - went down the memory lane - albeit for different reasons.

Praising Bangladesh government's strict action against terrorism and militancy, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has assured Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of taking a common stand in terms of relations with the nation. Stressing that common water resources must act as a uniting force, she pitched for a comprehensive solution to sharing of waters of all common rivers between the two countries. "Our relations are very good...one that can not ever be spoilt", the Bangladesh Prime Minister said, recalling the sacrifices of Indian servicemen in the country's Liberation War of 1971 at an interactive session here organised by industry chambers Ficci, CII and Assocham.

However, he said they are open to discussion on sharing the waters of joint rivers.

The media conference will be held at prime minister's official residence Ganabhaban at 4:30pm, Hasina's Deputy Press Secretary Ashraful Alam Khokon told bdnews24.com.

The visiting Prime Minister said ties between the neighbours will undergo "another transformation" with a water pact. "But Modiji has given the assurance that he is there to see what happens", she said.

Banerjee's position is that the treaty would render north Bengal dry and affect farmers of her state.

During Hasina's visit, Dhaka and New Delhi on April 8 signed 22 agreements and MoUs in the areas of defence, energy and nuclear power, among others.

An agreement on Teesta could not be signed after two major attempts - once during the Dhaka tour of former Indian premier Manmohan Singh in 2011 and again during Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh in 2015.

All India National Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Indian External Affairs Minister Sushama Swaraj and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Mukherjee also called on her.
