Ailing Josh Donaldson not starting in Blue Jays' home opener

Doyle BarkerApr 12, 2017

At no point did the veteran who is expected to be central to the success of the Jays offence go anywhere near home plate however. After a 2015 campaign in which he compiled a 1-6 record and a 2.58 ERA over 69 appearances, he appeared in 72 games last season and drummed up a 4-3 record and 2.68 ERA.

After the rough slide through Baltimore and Tampa to start the season and with the Leafs and Raptors finalizing playoff plans, the home opener may have been robbed of some of its festive sizzle. Ryan Braun led the Brewers with a 1 for 4 night with a 3-run home run.

J.A. Happ's March Madness: Jays' starter J.A. Happ played his college ball at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. The Rays got on the board first in the fifth, however the Jays scored the next two with a Tulowitzki RBI single in the seventh and a Donaldson single in the eighth. "That will do wonders". Last year's Jays went 46-35 at home (on their way to 89-73 overall), outscoring opponents by 38 runs in their home confines.

"I think that's an understatement", Gibbons said. "I do think he's missing his pitches".

"I'm not anxious about it", said Donaldson, who missed time during spring training with a strain in a different area of the calf. Those aren't big issues.

He says there's nothing quite like the feeling of being in the stadium, surrounded by family, watching the team you love. "Some that he's fouling off now, in the future he won't miss them".

Osuna's in the midst of his third season with the Jays.

After attending all 39 of the Toronto Blue Jays' home openers, one super fan will be watching at home with his family this year due to the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Josh Donaldson will not start for the Blue Jays as they take on the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday in the home opener.

He attended the World Series games when the Blue Jays won in 1992 and 1993 and has kept the hope alive ever since. Of course, this is the Bringer of Rain we're talking about, so obviously Donaldson did more than just get on base.

"The Blue Jays mean everything to me", he said. "I would rather play today and see what happens tomorrow".

Following the ALCS loss to the Blue Jays, Bell was released by the White Sox.

Given the injury woes the team has had recently, that may ultimately be a sound strategy. But this year, Nelson will watch from his couch while eating dinner with his family on Tuesday night.
