Wikileaks Is A 'Hostile Intelligence Service — Trump's CIA Director

Miranda GreerApr 14, 2017

He then blasted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as "a fraud" and "a coward, hiding behind a screen", and he criticized National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden for championing "nothing but his own celebrity".

It was WikiLeaks' role in the 2016 election campaign, in which it released pilfered emails from the Democratic National Committee and later from the personal email account of the Clinton campaign chairman, John Podesta, that hardened establishment views of the group as hostile to particular figures, such as Clinton, and intent on molding USA policies. "We've got to strengthen our own systems; we've got to improve internal mechanisms that help us in our counterintelligence mission", Pompeo said.

There's something of an irony in Pompeo's remarks, given that he was promoting WikiLeaks' releases of Hillary Clinton-related material during the elections. Angus King (I-Maine), a member of the committee, pointed to a tweet Pompeo sent out in July declaring, "Need further proof that the fix was in from Pres. Obama on down?"

Precisely what actions the Trump administration could take against Assange and WikiLeaks is not clear. Mr. Pompeo is a former Army officer who graduated first in his class from West Point. He died in Havana in 2008. "They cling to this fiction, even though their disclosures often inflict irreparable harm". Pompeo was busted. Pompeo repeated that he had never considered WikiLeaks a "credible source".

President Trump praised WikiLeaks repeatedly on the campaign trail as stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta were published.

"The right to receive and impart true information is the guiding principle of WikiLeaks", wrote Assange, who now resides in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Pompeo spoke at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

"They ask really hard questions", he said. He added that Russian Federation would continue to try to meddle in elections in the United States, and was doing the same in Europe.

Pompeo did not comment on specifically on those releases on Thursday, but underscored the CIA's job as a foreign intelligence agency, not an organisation that targets Americans.

At one point, Trump even declared that he loved Assange's website but the president's choice for the top position at the Central Intelligence Agency doesn't seem to care for it so much these days.

Like Trump, Pompeo said China was of utmost importance to solving the issue.

He said he believes Trump is completely prepared to hear intelligence that "runs opposite to the hypothesis".

The North Koreans are making progress toward their nuclear missile goal and are "certainly closer now than at any time in North Korea's history", he said. Second, he wants to improve "internal mechanisms" for counterintelligence, to be "as clever and innovative as the enemies we face" (okay).
