EPA Considers Repealing Another Obama-Era Coal Regulation

Brittany BishopApr 15, 2017

The next day, the EPA's scientific integrity office said it was reviewing whether Pruitt violated agency policies when he publicly questioned the role of carbon pollution in climate change.

"All of us must re-double ourselves", she said.

Miners at Consol's Harvey Mine in Greene County gathered before and after their shifts awaiting the arrival of Scott Pruitt - President Trump's top environmental official - who spoke the words they wanted to hear.

Scott Pruitt, President Trump's Environmental Protection Agency administrator, has voiced support for the White House's proposal to radically cut the agency's budget.

"The past administration said we had to choose between the environment and job growth".

The Trump administration has already taken steps to undo landmark climate regulations, such as the executive order President Donald Trump signed last month that called for repealing former President Barack Obama's Clean Power Plan, which requires states to slash emissions and was a central component of the U.S.'s plan to meet its Paris goals.

Still, even with fewer environmental regulations, the coal industry faces stiff competition from the natural gas industry. "I've noticed a huge difference in the workforce and just the morale of everybody", Chris Randolph said. We need to stop burning dirty coal for the future of the planet, and increasingly, low-priced renewables like wind and solar are leading the way.

The company blamed the "destruction of the coal industry" by the Obama administration for its inability to provide the benefits to the retirees. Under Trump's budget, climate change research would be obliterated, funding for the cleanup of hazardous sites would be slashed by 45 percent and a projected 3,200 jobs would be eliminated.

The public has 30 days to comment. The agency has asked for 10 additional full-time staff members for a round-the-clock security detail - a first for an E.P.A. chief, who usually has only door-to-door protection - and more than doubling the agency's infrastructure and operations staff.

Pruitt said his own biggest objection with the accord is that "America was put last".

Pruitt has voiced objection to the EPA's Accidental Release Prevention Requirements in the past, writing a letter in 2016 while he was Oklahoma Attorney General to then EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy urging her to rethink course on the rule.

"Despite all this, Trump's EPA administrator is trying to throw it all away to placate polluters", Hitt said.

It is meant to bring the EPA more in line with what the administration says is the agency's original goal: returning authority to states and focusing on regulating air and water pollutants that are not greenhouse gases, as well as repealing major Obama-era regulations.
