Rose, Garcia tied for lead at Masters in prelude to finale

Doyle BarkerApr 15, 2017

Spieth has been the tournament's 54-hole leader the past three years.

He has plenty of company.

Justin Rose has a share of the lead going into the final round of the Masters, at Augusta National.

And the fun is just starting. The forecast is for little-to-no wind, sunny skies and temperatures in the high 60s.

That won't make it any easier, as survival gives way to what could be a shootout among some of golf's biggest stars. "We fought back tremendously to have a chance to win this golf tournament, and no matter what happens at the end, we will have a chance to win with a really good round (Sunday)". "We're in a good spot".

Redemption could potentially be on the cards, with Spieth one of three players who will head into the final round two shots off the lead.

Spieth bounced back from that disaster, especially in Friday's second round.

It was a miserable day for four-times major champion Ernie Els, who was seeking his first Masters title at the age of 47.

Even with a 65-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, Els shot an 83 on Saturday.

One day after making history as the first Mid-Amateur champion to make the Masters cut in 28 years, Stewart Hagestad continued his solid play Saturday, shooting a 2-over 74 to stand at 5-over. Hoffman was simply happy to join them.

The leaders were at 4-under 140.

Sergio Garcia has a share of the lead after three rounds at the Masters.

The Masters third round featured big moves by Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth.

This time, the Masters appears to be up for grabs. In his first three attempts, he entered Sunday with the lead or co-lead. He wound up birdieing that hole, and if he gets another green jacket on Sunday, that will likely be the shot that he most credits with getting him there. Rose had an electric day, improving by five strokes in Round 3. His lead was gone when he sprayed another tee shot into the trees at No. 11.

Garcia started to show the strain, with a couple of dropped shots, but he turned his fortunes around after drawing a penalty on the par-five 13th for hitting a ball in a water hazard before recovering to make par. "For me in my position I just have to play a really good front nine, so I can start something on the back nine".

"I feel great. I mean, after the first round I couldn't ask for much better than this". I don't hit - my fairways hit is 55 percent. All three were wearing dark sweaters during the search, and the scorers were confused with who lost the ball.

Next is Spieth, who opened with 75. A few holes later, however, it was changed to 1 under on the scoreboard, and Garcia pointed to the board behind the 13th green. Garcia's an old 37, having been a known golfer in the public eye nearly half his life. I don't even know how much it would mean to be able to join both of my idols as a Masters victor. Sergio Garcia received the kind of break that allowed him to wonder if maybe the golfing gods are finally on his side after all these years. "The one place you don't want to miss it on that green is short, which I did". Rose, who won the 2013 U.S. Open, is gunning for his first Master's title.

Also challenging were Australian Adam Scott, the 2013 victor, at three under, with 2011 champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa another shot back.

And right there with them was Mickelson, who can become the oldest Masters champion. The former US Open victor, and Olympic gold medallist recorded birdies on his final two holes, in a back-nine of -5, to book his spot in Sunday's final group. "I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I don't even know how much it would mean to be able to join both my idols as a Masters victor".
