North Korea warns USA on 'provocative' action

Contrary to widespread speculations, North Korea did not carry out another ballistic missile launch or a nuclear test on the occasion of Kim Il Sung's 105th birthday. Washington has voiced concerns over Pyongyang's nuclear tests, but the North says such launches are an act as deterrence against a potential invasion by the US or South Korea.

Korean People's Army (KPA) tanks are displayed during a military parade marking the 105th anniversary of the birth of late North Korean leader Kim Il-Sung in Pyongyang on April 15, 2017.

Fears over the North's rogue weapons programme have soared in recent days, with a USA naval strike force deployed near the Korean peninsula, while President Donald Trump has warned the threat "will be taken care of" and Pyongyang has vowed a "merciless" response to any provocation.

The North has said it has developed and would launch a missile that can strike the mainland United States, but officials and experts believe it is some time away from mastering all the necessary technology.

The emergence of the probable ICBMs, which appear not to have been flight-tested but could be in an advanced state of development, are significant: U.S. President Trump said in January that North Korea developing such capabilities "won't happen".

"Though analysts questioned what was inside the missile shells, they said the appearance of a submarine-launched ballistic missile shows North Korea is progressing with its plan to launch missiles from anywhere in the sea".

It's also conducted engine tests that analysts say could potentially power a long-range missile.

The Associated Press has quoted USA officials as saying the Trump administration will focus on working with China to raise pressure on North Korea rather than stepping in with military force.

The North also a year ago launched a long-range rocket that put a satellite into orbit, which Washington, Seoul and others saw as a banned test of missile technology.

North Korea has showed off its strength by testing two nuclear bombs and multiple missile tests in the past year.

China scrambled another 25,000 troops along the North Korean border, while all five Chinese military regions were ordered by Beijing to maintain readiness for the possibility of conflict.

Unlike at some previous parades attended by Kim, there did not appear to be a senior Chinese official in attendance.

Now, however, there is a new president in the USA, and North Korea's weapons programme is about to make a breakthrough.

Wang's comments on Friday mark the latest attempt to cool tensions by North Korea's most important ally and key provider of food and fuel aid.

North Korea rolled out intercontinental ballistic missiles and other military hardware at a massive parade on April 15 and vowed that it was "ready to hit back with nuclear attacks" against its enemies.

But diplomats in Pyongyang point out that the North raises its rhetoric every spring, when Washington and Seoul hold annual joint military exercises that it views as preparations for invasion. The spokesperson for the General Staff Department said in the statement that they had been instructed to release the statement, suggesting that the instructions had come from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

North Korea's Supreme Leader, Kim Jong Un, was shown clapping and smiling from a reviewing box. This would allow North Korea to prevent its limited number of ICBM-capable launcher trucks from being damaged during launches and also make the missiles harder to detect after they're fired, he said.
