Boris Johnson 'dismayed' by Russia's UN Syria veto

"We have to see common threats" and not be guided by emotions, because "overthrowing the regime" may mean losing the battle against Islamic State, Lavrov said. "In order to overcome such obstacles we will need to imply weighty efforts on condition that our USA colleagues will meet them".

"We need to attempt to put an end to this steady degradation", Tillerson said.

Western governments and Syrian monitoring groups, including the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, say the chemical assault harmed civilians.

Samples taken from Khan Sheikhoun last week also tested positive for the nerve agent sarin, the British delegation at the global chemical weapons watchdog OPCW said on Thursday.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said experts had analysed available information "and their preliminary assessment (was) that this was a credible allegation". "You have a lot of fake videos now", he said. "Were they dead at all".

Assad said Syria's military had given up all its chemical weapons in 2013 after an agreement made at the time and that "even if we had them, we would not use them".

The talks got off to a frosty start, with the Russian politician branding the American cruise missile strike "illegal" and criticising "confusing and sometimes openly contradictory ideas" from the Trump administration on the US-Russia relationship and worldwide issues.

But he said his forces had not been diminished by the USA strike.

Tillerson reiterated the USA belief that Assad ordered the attack, though he stepped back from the US charge that Russian Federation was covering up Assad's culpability.

Stoltenberg said within the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance, the U.S. military action on Syria has been met with understanding.

Before travelling to Moscow for talks with his Russian and Syrian counterparts, Zarif criticised Washington's unilateral move and reiterated his call for an impartial worldwide investigation into the attack, Efe news reported.

"Right now we're not getting along with Russian Federation at all", Trump flatly declared at a White House press conference on Wednesday, giving stark proof the president is moving ever further from his 2016 campaign promise to establish better ties with Moscow.

Only weeks ago, it appeared that Mr Trump, who praised Mr Putin throughout the United States election campaign, was poised for a potentially historic rapprochement with Russian Federation.

The dim view of U.S.

"So I am dismayed that Russian Federation has once again blocked the UN Security Council and in so doing refused to condemn the use of chemical weapons or support a full UN investigation into the attack".

The feuding also played out at the United Nations, where Russian Federation was expected to veto a Security Council resolution to bolster calls for worldwide inquiries into the chemical attack.

After a campaign marked by friendly comments about Russia, President Donald Trump sounded a different note on Wednesday about the current state of U.S. -Russia affairs.

Numerous Western powers, including the United States, blamed the government of Bashar al-Assad of the attack. Both Washington and Moscow, Tillerson said, want a "unified and stable" Syria, so the country does not become a "safe haven" for terrorists.

The attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun last Tuesday left 89 people dead and hundreds injured.

IS is facing twin offensives by Iraqi forces on the city of Mosul and by an Arab-Kurdish alliance on its de facto Syrian capital Raqa, backed by a US-led coalition that launched air strikes against the jihadists in 2014.
