While surfing off the coast of Western Australia, a girl aged 17 has been killed by a shark. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The girl was taken in critical condition to Esperance Hospital, where she died.

A teenage girl has died from a shark attack while surfing in Western Australia.

Police confirmed that the teen had died, but did not disclose her identity, saying only that she was from Mandurah, which is near Perth.

Shark Smart WA reported sightings of a great white shark in the area in the past week, according to The West Australian.

They were at the popular surf break known as Kelp Beds.

Seven News said the girl's leg was badly mauled in the attack and she lost a lot of blood when pulled from the water. It's believed the same shark was spotted twice.

A year ago there were four fatal shark attacks worldwide, two of which occurred in Western Australia, according to the university's records.

Caitlyn Rintoul, a journalist for local newspaper The Esperance Express, said the Wylie Bay area was being patrolled by wildlife officials and the beach was closed.

In the same area as this latest incident in Wylie Bay, Sean Pollard lost his left arm and right hand in a shark attack in October 2014.
