Japan PM Issues Sarin-Gas Warning About North Korea

Miranda GreerApr 18, 2017

Mr. Abe's remarks were made to highlight Japan's vulnerability to North Korean attack rather than to reveal new intelligence, a spokesman for him said. "North Korea.is likely to maintain several facilities to produce chemical weapons, and already possesses a considerable number of them".

Tong Zhao, an analyst with the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy, told CNN that "it appears technically possible to put chemical weapon agents including nerve agents such as VX or sarin in the warhead of a ballistic missile". Leaders have in the past used the date to carry out weapons tests. Abe did not elaborate or say where he obtained the information, according to the reports. The 38 North website, which monitors North Korea, said that satellite imagery of the country's Pyunggye-ri nuclear test site suggests it is "primed and ready" for an explosion.

Japan is one of the U.S.'s closest allies in the region and is considered a prime target for a North Korean missile strike because of its proximity to the Korean Peninsula.

Just over a month ago, North Korea's military fired off at least three "practice missiles" that landed just a few hundred miles off the Japanese coast, prompting Abe to place his country on its highest level of alert.

Satellite images show continued activity around the North Portal.

On Tuesday President Trump tweeted that the U.S. would not be afraid to act alone on North Korea if Beijing does not help.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have spiked in recent days amid concerns that Pyongyang could be on the verge of executing its sixth nuclear test and as a USA aircraft carrier-led strike group heads to the region. "If they are unable to do so, the United States, with its allies, will!"
