Judge Neil Gorsuch Confirmed to US Supreme Court

Gorsuch was praised for his faithfulness to the Constitution and his ability to split his personal preferences from the law.

Mr Gorsuch, who was sworn in by Justice Anthony Kennedy, becomes the 113th justice to serve on the high court.

In keeping with longstanding precedent, Gorsuch was required to lie under oath twice, in separate ceremonies held at the Supreme Court and at the White House Rose Garden.

He is filling the almost 14-month vacancy after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, who served for almost three decades before his death in February of past year. Senate Republicans used the "nuclear option" in response to the Democrats' filibuster, allowing a simple majority of 51 votes to seat Gorsuch and future Supreme Court nominees. Gorsuch, who in the past has defended the rights of religious objectors to laws they say violate their beliefs, will vote in a major separation of church and state case from Missouri.

Markey mentioned how Trump had promised during the presidential campaign that anyone he nominated to the Court would be anti-abortion and pro-gun rights, what the senator described as litmus tests.

But one Supreme Court justice never interrupted anyone, male or female, for more than a decade: Clarence Thomas, the most conservative (and most reticent) member of the court, who is known for nearly never speaking in court.

The left threw up roadblocks at every turn throughout Gorsuch's confirmation process.

Under McConnell's leadership, the Senate past year refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to replace Scalia, an appointment that would have tilted the court to the left for the first time in decades.

Trump said he had faith in Gorsuch.

The swearing-in of Justice Neil M. Gorsuch on Monday restores the Supreme Court to full strength for the first time in almost 14 months and sets the stage for further conservative victories that could start accumulating quickly.

The White House ceremony was the second of two oaths, the first conducted privately in the Justices' Conference Room by Chief Justice John Roberts. Gorsuch clerked for Kennedy in the 1990s and said the justice was his mentor.

-He is the youngest nominee since Clarence Thomas, who was 43 when confirmed in 1991.

Gorsuch, however, frustrated Democrats and liberal groups over four days of confirmation hearings for refusing to share his views on even the most widely accepted Supreme Court rulings, such as Loving v. Virginia, which made interracial marriage legal nationwide.

The White House swearing-in ceremony was a departure from recent history. He was hired as a Supreme Court clerk by fellow Coloradan Justice Byron White. The prize noted the enduring friendship between the justices despite their ideological differences.

Stay on topic - This helps keep the thread focused on the discussion at hand.

Be Civil - It's OK to have a difference in opinion but there's no need to be a jerk.
