40 missing as bus falls into river in Himachal Pradesh

At least 44 people died when a passenger bus fell into a river in India's northern mountainous state of Himachal Pradesh.

Global Road Safety Report - 2015 released by the World Health Organization past year, however, said India accounted for more than 200,000 deaths annually due to road accidents. Initially it was said the bus had 56 passengers on board, but the conductor put the number at 46.

"We are now bringing the last four bodies out", he added.

He said the cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained and a majority of the victims were from the two states.

Shimla SP, D W Negi said all 45 bodies have been recovered and sent for postmortem. "There is no history of such a heavy toll in the entire area", said Deputy Commissioner Thakur.

Rescue teams have reached the scene and recovery operations are under way. The rescue team rushed to the spot of the incident to help the people still trapped, rescue process is under way.

Uttarakhand government announced compensation of Rs 1 lakh for kin of those dead, Rs 50,000 for severely injured and Rs 25,000 for injured.

Himachal Pradesh Transport Minister G.S. Bali announced a financial assistance of Rs. 50,000 each to the families of the deceased.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh expressed grief over the accident.
