Ice to Meet You: Newfoundland Sees First 'Berg of Season

Miranda GreerApr 20, 2017

A large iceberg passes the South Shore, also known as "Iceberg Alley", near Ferryland, Newfoundland, Canada April 16.

A massive iceberg has parked off the coast of a Canadian town and tourism officials are pretty excited about it. He told the CBC that his company gets "a tremendous amount" of online bookings and the season has been promising so far.

"The opportunity to get a good picture without actually going out in a boat is right here", Kavanagh said.

Experts are attributing the increase in uncommonly strong counter-clockwise winds that are drawing the icebergs south, and perhaps also climate change, which accelerates the process by which chunks of the Greenland ice sheet break off and float away.

Ferryland, Newfoundland, is host to a special visitor, as seen here on Sunday: a giant iceberg, the first of the season. Still, it's nowhere near the biggest classification of icebergs tracked by the Canadian Ice Service. Many of those have headed towards the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.

In 2014, there were 1546 icebergs in the shipping lanes - the sixth most severe season on record since 1900, according to the patrol.

The International Ice Patrol was formed after the sinking of the Titanic to monitor iceberg danger in the North Atlantic and warn ships. Last year, 687 icebergs were spotted from the start of the year to September, according to CTV. The Canadian Press reports that 616 have already moved into the North Atlantic shipping lanes compared to 687 by the late-September season's end a year ago.

Usually just the tip of an iceberg is visible, with the rest of the mass beneath the waves, so many run aground when they float near the coast.
