Tropical Storm Arlene forms in Atlantic — FIRST ALERT WEATHER

However, it may raise questions about whether predictions of a below average hurricane season this year may be off the mark.

Arlene holds maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and moves to the west-northwest at 25 miles per hour. It wasn't surprising that it developed enough to become Sub-Tropical Depression 1 on Wednesday morning.

NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite captured this visible image of Tropical Depression One in the North Central Atlantic Ocean on April 20 at 15:12 UTC (11:12 a.m. EDT).

As it's no threat to any land, Arlene is more or less just a curiosity for forming so early in the year.

Arlene is not expected to be around for long.

The system is expected to be absorbed by another low pressure system and weaken quickly by Friday. The classification "sub-tropical" means it has some characteristics of both a tropical cyclone and a non-tropical cyclone. Arlene began as a subtropical depression.

Technically, subtropical systems have their strongest winds further from the center and don't have a fully warm core.

The official start of the hurricane season is not until June 1. Experts say El Nino conditions usually result in more wind shear, which cuts down on the number of tropical storms and hurricanes.

Tropical storm formation over the Atlantic basin is very rare during the months of January, February, March and April. Post-tropical cyclone Arlene is now forecast to dissipate later today. It gained further steam by Thursday afternoon and became Tropical Storm Arlene.

There have been numerous seasons that started early. "That year was just an average year with one USA landfall", said Jeansonne.

In fact there were two just a year ago.
