Andy Murray Beaten By Albert Ramos-Vinolas At Monte Carlo Masters

Andy Murray reflects on his shock loss to Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the round of 16 at the Monte Carlo Masters on Thursday.

After dumping out world number one Andy Murray in the third round the day before, the diminutive Spaniard returned to knock-out mode as he tamed Cilic to surge into the first Masters 1000 semi-final of his career.

Murray, returning from a right elbow injury which sidelined him during the Miami Open and Davis Cup quarterfinals, struggled on his serve in a scrappy match lasting more than 2 1/2 hours.

The Spaniard, taking part in his fifth clay court tournament this year, will now face the victor of the match between Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas and Frenchman Lucas Pouille.

"I played well. I played much better than yesterday". Djokovic was taken to three sets by 32nd-ranked Gilles Simon and 19th-ranked Pablo Carreno Busta and could well have lost both. Goffin saved two sets points on his serve at 5-3 down, but Djokovic held easily on his next service game to level the match.

Murray tried to be philosophical about it afterwards: 'I'm disappointed to lose from the position that I was in, ' he admitted.

"Of course, playing in Monte Carlo has a special meaning to me because I live here and I train in this club all year round".

But the early Monte Carlo exit, coupled with the need to get back to full sharpness after suffering with fitness and health issues this year, have convinced Murray to play in the Barcelona event, which is worth 500 ranking points.

Things were harder for Djokovic, who was a break up in the third set against Carreno Busta, but allowed his rival back into the contest as the Spaniard rallied from 4-2 down to level, only for the Serbian to win the last two games.

Ramos-Vinolas faces fifth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia, who beat No. 9 Tomas Berdych 6-2, 7-6 (0).

Ramos-Vinolas' compatriot Rafael Nadal, the defending champion, made short work of Germany's Alexander Zverev today with a 6-1, 6-1 win in one hour and eight minutes.

Nadal will now face the victor of another pre-quarterfinal clash between Buenos Aires' Diego Schwartzman and Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff.
