Twitter wants to air more live videos on its platform

Brittany BishopApr 27, 2017

As Noto notes, "Our goal is to be a dependable place so that when you want to see what's happening, you think of going to Twitter". The executive didn't go into many details on what the firm is working on but did reveal that they plan to unveil some new show-like content for their live video platform at the News Front event in order to attract advertisers' attention.

Twitter loudly touted its 2016 National Football League deal in press releases and earnings calls last year, so losing it to Amazon the following year wasn't a great look. Twitter had paid $10 million (£7.8 million) for its original deal a year ago, but Amazon paid $50 million (£39 million) for the same rights earlier this month. However, it lost its chance to stream games over the 2017-18 season to Amazon.

Twitter already plays host to a number of live shows, including programming from Bloomberg, BuzzFeed itself (election coverage, for example) and live sports.

California, April26:Twitter wants to air more live videos on its platform, and it wants to air them all day every day.

Noto hasn't said which shows are coming or when, but the company will cover sports, news, and entertainment programming.

Despite losing the National Football League deal, the micro-blogging firm sees live video as a pillar of its growth and revenue strategy.

Twitter's emphasis on live video content has been a cornerstone of their plan to address stagnant user growth and retention, and it seems that they're going to double down on that strategy by offering 24/7 live content akin to cable TV.

Noto said that Twitter would take some time to reach its 24/7 programming goal, but didn't offer a specific timeline. But not all of these are likely to be the kind of glossy, HBO-esque shows services like Netflix are picking up.

We think that is a great way to have the programming carried along with you during your day.

Is Twitter Heading Toward A New Direction?

"Focus in on it when you hear something that's of interest, but then maybe not be 100 percent focused on it when it's not of interest", the executive said. "I did that myself during the debates".

Earlier this month, The Telegraph reported that Twitter hopes to sign content deals with pay-TV companies that would allow you to access live channels over the social network.
