Hurricanes acquire G Darling from Chicago for draft pick

Doyle BarkerApr 29, 2017

Darling, a Chicago native, has expressed his desire to be a No. 1 goalie, even if it means leaving his hometown team.

The draft pick heading to Chicago is a third round selection that was originally Ottawa's.

The risk for the Hurricanes is that Darling will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and they will have to get him signed to a new contract before then to avoid potentially losing him (and the third-round pick they sent to Chicago) for nothing.

Francis told Chip Alexander of the News and Observer that he spoke with Darling for the first time after he and Chicago's Stan Bowman completed the trade, and that the goaltender was "genuinely excited about the opportunity and the fact we stepped up and showed interest in trading for him".

There is speculation that Carolina went through with this trade to leave Darling unprotected, and having the Vegas Golden Knights sign him.

Darling, 28, compiled a 39-17-9 record with a career goals against average of 2.37, a.923 save percentage and four shutouts in three seasons with the Blackhawks.

The team Press Release follows.

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired goaltender Scott Darling from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a 2017 third-round draft pick which was initially property of the Ottawa Senators.

Carolina Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said he would address the team's goaltending this offseason. And, while his play in games 5 and 6 fell off considerably, it's very likely that the Black Hawks don't write their names on the Stanley Cup in 2015 without Darling's play in the opening round. His save percentage ranked tied for fourth among all National Hockey League goaltenders who started more than 25 games this season.

The 6-foot-6, 232-pound goalie recorded the decision in each of his career-high 27 starts (18-5-4).

He made a name for himself in Chicago during his rookie year in 2014-15, when he started 13 games during the regular season, saving.936 percent of the shots that came his way, while posting a.194 goals allowed average.

Darling, who like Bishop played collegiate hockey at the University of ME, had an extremely long and winding path to the NHL despite being a sixth-round pick of the Coyotes in 2007. Before making his NHL debut, he played games at almost every North American professional level, including the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), ECHL, Central Hockey League (CHL) and American Hockey League (AHL).
