US businesses added solid 177000 jobs in April

ADP, which jointly developed its employment report with Moody's Analytics, said private employers face increasing difficulty finding qualified workers in a tightening labor market.

Although robust ADP data for January and February was followed by stronger than expected data for non-farm payrolls, the relationship broke down for March's data as the non-farm payrolls estimate was substantially below the ADP figure at 98,000.

Ahead of today's market open, Automatic Data Processing (ADP - Free Report), the premier private-sector employment survey reporter, showed a gain of 177K new non-government jobs in the month of April.

The ADP report is based on an analysis of the company's payroll data. The government doesn't break out hiring by company size, but it will give some indication of how small businesses are faring.

Federal Reserve policymakers are analyzing recent economic data as they meet this week to decide whether to raise a key short-term interest rate. Growth was just 0.7 percent at an annual rate in the first quarter, and auto sales slumped last month.

As is usually the case, most of the new jobs - 165,000 - were created in service-providing industries - with professional/business services adding 72,000 positions, followed by administrative/support services (+53,000), education/health services (+41,000), leisure/hospitality (+ 35,000), and health care/social assistance (+22,000).

Construction hiring accelerated in the first two months of the year, when temperatures were warmer than usual, and has leveled off since then.

Only the information industry recorded a decline in employment.

Employers added 177,000 jobs versus expectations for a 180,000 increase.

Economists had expected the April figure to be 175,000.

While the ADP report showed hiring fell to a six-month low, most economists weren't concerned. Paul Ashworth, an economist at research firm Capital Economics, said April's job gains are enough to lower the unemployment rate over time.
