Facebook plans strong push into TV, video content

Facebook is reportedly gearing up to roll out its roster of original content soon.

There will be both long duration shows on the pattern of "House of Cards" and also 5-10 minutes shows that will be added to Facebook app's video tab daily, Business Insider reported on Friday.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in February that he wanted users to come to the service for "episodic content". With this program, we hope to enable creativity and experimentation with video that is community-driven and takes advantage of the social interaction unique to Facebook. Now, according to a report from Business Insider, Facebook is planning to unveil its plans to enter that market next month with two different formats of video...

The new video initiative means that Facebook will play a much more hands-on role in controlling the content that appears on its almost 2-billion-member social network. According to sources, this show, created by Conde Nest Entertainment, will have two participants go on a first date in VR before they actually meet in person.

Remember, Facebook had launched a standalone video app for Apple TV and other set-top boxes last month, and this could be used as a platform for these new shows. Other shows may feature A-list celebrities, too, with one major star already contracted in a deal. Snapchat has been actively pursuing show deals with numerous same of the same companies as Facebook for its Discover section. Another said Facebook had initially planned to unveil its shows around its developer conference in mid-April, but decided to instead make the debut in time for the Cannes Lions advertising festival, which starts on June 17. Anyone will be able to watch the said shows since they will be supported by ads. The company will initially secure rights for shows and plans to recoup costs later on when it introduces the said type of ads.

Back in December, rumours started flying that Facebook was looking to follow Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix into the original content game.

"Earlier this year, we started rolling out the Video tab, a dedicated place for video on Facebook".
