Only PM Modi can solve problems in Kashmir, says CM Mehbooba Mufti

Miranda GreerMay 07, 2017

If anyone can find a solution to Jammu Kashmir problem, it is Prime Minister Modi, as he (Modi) has a strong mandate.

Reiterating her stand of initiating the dialogue process to restore peace in Kashmir, Mufti said, The previous prime minister also wanted to visit Pakistan, but could not.

As for Mehbooba reaching out to the PM, the differences between the BJP and PDP remain despite a high-level meeting between her and Modi in New Delhi last month. "This is not a sign of weakness but an indication of strength and power", she said. "It's a sign of strength that PM Modi visited Lahore in just an hour. It is my earnest appeal", she said.

"He also would have tried to end the confrontation between the two countries, and bring J&K out of this unfortunate situation, but he had no courage to do that".

"If anyone can take us out of the sticky spot, it is Prime Minister Modi".

The remarks come amid ongoing violence in Jammu and Kashmir with a spate of militant attacks and frequent clashes between civilians and security forces.

Amid speculations of the Centre dismissing her administration and imposing Governor's Rule in the state, Mehbooba threw her weight behind Modi and praised the PM for his surprise Christmas visit to Lahore two years ago. "It was not an ordinary feat", she said in an apparent hint to push for talks.

Meanwhile, the Congress has also asked for a thorough investigation into the reports of Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI funding separatist leaders in Kashmir to spread violence.

"The chief minister said militancy declined during that period and there was peace on the borders".

Complimenting people of Jammu for having maintained communal harmony and brotherhood despite provocations, Mehbooba said nobody would be allowed to disturb the peaceful atmosphere and mischief mongers would be dealt with sternly. "Subsequently, lava (among Kashmiri youth) kept simmering since 2008 and today we are facing its ramifications", she said.

Vohra had on Tuesday met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and apprised him of the security situation in the state.

Speaking on the existing situation in the valley, Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh on Saturday asserted that their focus towards the state had not changed, while assuring to bring growth and development soon.
