Effort to block Confederate statue's removal goes to court

A second Jim Crow-era monument may be coming down overnight.

Dozens of people - a crowd of monument supporters, and a crowd supporting its removal - gathered at the Davis statue early Thursday before it was removed, at times screaming insults and threats at each other. He said the city is within its rights to remove the monuments. The process began last month when the Liberty Peace Monument was torn down. The statues are coming down after a judge rejected a last-minute injunction to halt the removal of the monuments.

It wasn't immediately clear how long it would take workers to remove the pedestal. "I believe we must remember all of our history, but we need not revere it", he added.

Quess Moore said he came out to watch the monument be taken down "to celebrate the victory in the battle against white supremacy particularly in New Orleans".

The Jefferson Davis Memorial, located at Jefferson Davis Parkway and Canal Street is being removed about two and a half weeks after the monument to the Battle of Liberty Place was removed.

The demonstrators would like the monuments to stay up, but after a judge denied a request to block the removal of the P.G.T. Beauregard statue Wednesday, and with all legal avenues exhausted, those supporting keeping the monuments up have ideas on where the Davis monument should go. That symbolism of a "better future" should be especially appealing to a new mayor in St. Louis who took power from a four-term incumbent who was resented and distrusted by most black residents. But supporters of the monuments say they have new documents that were not available during the federal hearing. The committee's next step was to obtain an injunction at Wednesday's hearing to stop the city from removing Beauregard.

Masked crews, using a massive crane and trucks removed a controversial statue of former confederate President Jefferson Davis.

"This morning we continue our march to reconciliation by removing the Jefferson Davis Confederate statue from its pedestal of reverence", Tweeted Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

The Monumental Task Committee, which wants to preserve Confederate monumnets, had a different take. Lee's is in Lee Circle, and Beauregard's is at the entrance to City Park.
