Former French Prime Minister Manuel Valls Seeks To Join Emmanuel Macron's Revolution

At a victory party in Paris on Tuesday, Macron said the country has sent an incredible message to itself, to Europe and the world, adding that he would "guarantee the unity of the nation and defend and protect Europe".

The Republicans party, whose candidate Francois Fillon crashed out in the first round of the presidential election after being charged over giving his wife allegedly "fake" jobs on the public payroll, is also aiming to become the majority party in parliament.

Showing who is in charge right now, his Republic on the Move party made clear on Wednesday that even top-rank politicians from established parties were not guaranteed a slot on its list of parliamentary contenders. Macron, after all, said in his election manifesto that Brexit was a "crime" that would plunge the United Kingdom into "servitude", and he told reporters after visiting Theresa May in February that Brexit "cannot lead to a kind of optimisation of Britain's relationship with the rest of Europe".

The legislative elections on June 11 and 18 will now decide whether Macron's "Republic on the Move" party - barely a year old and still without seats in parliament - will win enough seats to let him govern effectively for the next five years.

Paris: Incoming French president Emmanuel Macron was starting to build his centrist government today, with his former Socialist boss Manuel Valls jockeying for position in a radically changed political landscape.

"There is one extremely important criterion and that is the sincerity of (the candidate's) support for the presidential program", he told Reuters. "(Vall's) voice is not insignificant, but his candidacy will be treated like anyone else's". The poor result has triggered a fierce debate within the Socialists about whether to stick with Hamon's left-wing platform or to switch back to the more centrist views of Valls and his allies.

On Europe, Macron said he would work to rebuild links between Europe and the people that form it. "I'm not living with regrets".

Kinya Seto, president of major housing equipment maker Lixil Group Corp., told reporters, "I'm relieved that France opted not to take an extreme approach". I want Emmanuel Macron, his government and his majority to succeed, for France. If another party wins a majority, Macron could be pressured to choose a prime minister from that party. A majority would provide Macron with a decent chance of implementing a blueprint for lower state spending, higher investment and reform of the tax, labour and pensions systems.
