SolarCity to start installing Tesla Solar Roof next month

Tesla has started accepting online orders for its solar roof tiles as it sets sites on ddelivering the first USA home installations of the flagship technology this summer.

Electric auto maker Tesla has added another product to its lineup: Solar roof tiles. This week, they got them.

Solar roof panels from popular company Tesla are now available for pre-order after CEO Elon Musk originally said they would be ready to order in April.

"The typical homeowner can expect to pay $21.85 per square foot for Solar Roof, and benefit from a lovely new roof that also increases the value of their home", Tesla said in a statement. Tesla is taking a $1,000 deposit and hopes to start the first installations in June.

To that end, Tesla will offer financing options later this year. The glass tiles were unveiled by Tesla last fall just before the company merged with solar panel maker SolarCity Corp.

According to Electrek, Musk said in a conference call with journalists that the architecture of the solar roof tiles is of utmost importance to the company. From the street, the company says, the two look identical.

"I think it will be great", the billionaire tweeted.

While the initial amount consumers could save by switching to a solar roof was unclear, Musk said customers who purchased a roof would save "considerable" amounts of money over a traditional roof. With an integrated Powerwall, energy collected during the day is stored and made available any time, effectively turning a home into a personal utility. The roof is guaranteed for the life of the home, which is longer than the 20-year lifespan for a typical, non-solar roof, Musk said. Solar and the ability to store energy has become one of the primary focuses of Tesla and is right up there with its electric vehicle aspirations. It looks like the company is looking to hire over 50 roofers.

Through its acquisition of SolarCity, Tesla has now access to thousands of installers, but there are significant differences between installing solar panels and a whole roof.

Palo Alto, California-based Tesla Inc.is making the solar tiles at its Fremont, California, factory initially. Panasonic makes the photovoltaic cells used in the solar tiles.
