Rafael Nadal beats Dominic Thiem in Madrid Open final

Doyle BarkerMay 15, 2017

It was a fifth Madrid title for the 30-year-old and a record-equalling 30th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown, matching Novak Djokovic for the all-time lead.

Nadal notched is 71st career trophy and 52nd title on his preferred clay; he stands 15-0 on the surface in 2017.

Nadal was brutal coming in to the second set, breaking straight away, and denying Thiem a chance to try and break back immediately, from that point on no quarter was given until Nadal pushed and pressed fir a break to finish with Thiem saving two match points in the process.

Nadal saved a break of his own as the pair warred at deuce before he moved two games ahead, and the duo exchanged blows by serving the next four consecutive games to love, with Thiem's elder trotting ahead at 4-2. “It means a lot to me to win at home, its always a special place for me.”. Having already dispatched Lukas Lacko in the first qualifying round, the
British No 3 displayed early nerves in dropping his opening service game against Olivo. However, four games in succession helped Bedene secure the opening set before a decisive break in game five of the second sealed a 6-3, 6-4 victory in one hour and 36 minutes.

Djokovic earned his first break point of the match in the 12th game and he took the opportunity to draw level at 2-2 but Nadal was in a ruthless mood and hit back immediately with another break to regain a lead he would not relinquish.

It's not fair to say he hasn't been tested at times - Kyle Edmund and Fabio Fognini both put up considerable fights against the king of clay - but Nadal has passed every test of the claycourt season so far.

He told atpworldtour.com: " What's important to me is to make it to another final.

Neither player broke again in the first set, which duly went to a tie-break, in which Nadal claimed victory when Thiem sent a forehand long.

"This is a very emotional period of the season". As I go along, I hope to continue getting better and getting stronger. He also beat Djokovic in Monte Carlo where he made the semis. What I'm really happy about is to achieve a title like this here in Madrid.

Murray's fellow Briton Dan Evans lost 6-3 6-1 in the first round to Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, but compatriot Aljaz Bedene came through qualifying thanks to a 6-3 6-4 win over Argentina's Renzo Olivo.

He had landed a first win over Novak Djokovic for three years on Saturday and has now equalled Djokovic's record of 30 Masters Series titles. "Sometimes against the best players in the world, you even lose when you play well". "I take more positives than negatives into the next week in Rome".
