Trump Says New FBI Director Could Be Named Next Week

President Trump told reporters on May 13 that a "fast decision" could be made to name a new Federal Bureau of Investigation director to replace James Comey.

Critics have assailed Trump for abruptly dismissing Comey, who was leading the agency's investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election, and possible ties between Moscow and the Trump presidential campaign.

Almost a dozen people are being considered, including attorneys, law enforcement officials and legislators.

"I think the process is going to go quickly", Trump said.

Speaking on Saturday to about 50,000 people at Liberty University in Lynchburg, the nation's largest Christian college, Trump made no mention of Comey or the controversy his dismissal on Tuesday caused. "And that's what we want for the FBI", Trump said.

"The FBI is one of our Nation's most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement", President Trump said in a statement. He also sent out a tweet in which he appeared to threaten Comey by releasing recordings of their conversations. Trump said in the letter that he had agreed with Sessions and Rosenstein's recommendations and "you are hereby terminated and removed from office, effective immediately". John Cornyn (R-Tex.); acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe; Alice Fisher, a white-collar defense lawyer who previously led the Justice Department's criminal division; Michael J. Garcia, a judge on the New York State Court of Appeals who previously served as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York; Adam S. Lee, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Richmond field office; and U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, who presides over the Eastern District of Virginia. She declined to comment. That's according to two people familiar with the search process who weren't authorized to publicly discuss the deliberations and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Fisher was spotted leaving the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building in Washington Saturday morning after a 90-minute sitdown.

While Democrats have called for an independent special counsel to investigate the Russian Federation matter, most Republicans have said that is not necessary given the FBI probe and investigations in both the House and Senate.

The FBI has never had a female director.
