US VP Pence says to North Korea: 'The sword stands ready'

Brittany BishopMay 16, 2017

If we can't count on China to help resolve the stalemate with North Korea, what can USA leaders do?

"If the USA comes up with a unsafe military option, then the first card is in our hands, then we'll deal with it with our pre-emptive strike", he said.

US President Donald Trump has said that will not happen, and stepped up pressure on the isolated North.

The North Korean Vice Foreign Minister has blamed US President Trump for his bullish tweets.

He said the Trump administration's deployment of the Carl Vinson nuclear carrier task group to waters off the Korean Peninsula again "proves the USA reckless moves for invading the DPRK have reached a serious phase of its scenario".

"The Trump administration will seek out new and creative ways to meet the North Korea challenge", Ms Bishop told Australian show AM. He said North Korea's measures to bolster its nuclear forces are self-defensive "to cope with the US vicious nuclear threat and blackmail", and he said his country "is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the U.S".

Abe hailed Pence's visit as "extremely timely given the severe state of the situation surrounding North Korea". "Today we are beginning a process of economic dialogue, the end of which may result in bilateral trade negotiations in the future", he said.

US Vice President Mike Pence during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Speaking aboard the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier at the US Yokosuka naval base in Tokyo Bay, Mr Pence said the Trump administration would continue to "work diligently" with allies like Japan, China and other global powers to apply economic and diplomatic pressure on Pyongyang. North Korea's vice foreign minister Han Song Ryol told BBC that missiles will be tested weekly.

Mattis credited China with trying to help get the North Korea situation "under control" with the goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea's latest missile test fizzled over the weekend, but its weapons development has appeared to make steady progress in recent years. The North held a show of military might in a parade over the weekend and tested another missile on Sunday, which the Pentagon said blew up nearly immediately after launch. He suggested that US plans to deploy a missile defense system in South Korea were damaging its relations with China. At the time of a previous missile test by North Korea on April 5 USA satellites observed an increased activity in Sinpo.

President Donald Trump has already dispatched the USS Carl Vinson, powered by nuclear reactors, carrying nearly 100 aircraft and accompanied by destroyers, a cruiser, and a submarine to the region, reported the Daily Mail of UK.

The Turnbull government believes North Korea is on a path to achieving nuclear weapons capability.

Despite these warnings from the U.S., North Korean officials have not shown any signs of stepping back from their nuclear tests.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that China was ready to work "with all relevant countries" within the framework of the UN Security Council.
