Guajardo also stated that he would meet with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in Vietnam on Thursday, adding that a dispute over sugar with the U.S. could be resolved within two weeks.

The talk comes after President Donald Trump said he was going to sign an executive order on his 100th day in office to end the US partnership in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan, along with Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo, are among officials in Washington this week who are scheduled to meet U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

Last week Ross, the USA commerce secretary, said he hoped to resolve delays in Congress that would allow the White House to formally notify it of its intent to renegotiate NAFTA, which would start the 90-day clock before the talks could begin.

"I'm honoured for the opportunity to serve President Trump and Vice President Pence by working for fair and free trade that benefits all Americans", Ambassador Lighthizer said.

"President Donald Trump made a promise to the American people - to fight for trade that puts America first".

The Republican senator wants the Trump administration to revamp the agreement, not end it.

Global Affairs Canada, which promotes the country's worldwide trade, said that Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland and Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan would meet with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary James Mattis and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

Last week, Commerce's Ross said the United States and China had agreed to take action by mid-July to increase access to Chinese markets for US beef, financial services and liquefied natural gas.
