Local election results in Scotland likely to heal COSLA rift

Miranda GreerMay 18, 2017

James Kelly, Scottish Labour's general election campaign manager said: "It's clearer now than ever before that only Labour can defeat the SNP in vast swathes of Scotland".

The council elections will give the SNP all the info they need on where to channel resources to stop the Tories.

Clackmannanshire Council, the smallest authority in Scotland, was one of the first to declare all its results - with the SNP remaining the largest party after returning eight councillors, one fewer than in 2012.

Equally, the official tally of the parties' share of the first preference vote across Scotland as a whole, which was published today by Elections Scotland, confirms that the SNP was well ahead of the rest of the pack. "A vote for any other party simply risks letting the SNP back in, and increases the risk of another unwanted referendum".

"In standing up to the SNP's drive for separation, she is now more in touch with Scotland than Nicola Sturgeon". "But it's no surprise that the richest have got even richer after the tens of billions the Tories have handed them in tax cuts".

The comment fits with a national Conservative decision to carefully downplay their success, although it appears many inside the party are expectant of a significant win north of the border.

Meanwhile, Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson will urge Scots to "bring the SNP down to size" on 8 June.

Not too long ago, the city's council would have been a banker for Labour.

Ms Hair also increased the party's share of the vote by 15% in Angus South in the Scottish Parliament election past year. Over one in ten votes on May 4 were cast for independent candidates - in the Highlands and the Islands in particular, council elections are often still genuinely local rather than partisan battles. However, they may find that the harsh reality of a Westminster election is that 25 per cent of the overall vote, as achieved in the local elections, is not rewarded with 25 per cent of the seats.

The party has a list of seven Scottish seats in hoped to win based on council results.

The SNP leader will cite the Prime Minister's claims that European Union leaders are trying to interfere in the general election to warn that the Tories want a hard Brexit "whatever the cost to Scotland".

Ms Davidson insisted then: "We won the local government election is Gordon this week, beating the SNP into second place". Labour shed 112 councillors to trail in third on 262, losing control of three councils.

Liberal Democrats improved by one point to 9% and Ukip were unchanged on 7% - however the figure was released before the humiliating losses during local elections.

"Just because the Scottish Parliamentary voice that you hear on the television says that they want to break up the United Kingdom and that Scotland wants to leave, it doesn't mean that the majority of Scottish people believe that".
