Governor honors law enforcement officers fallen in the line of duty

Darin HammondMay 20, 2017

Already, almost 60 officers have died in the line of duty this year, adding to the more than 1,400 officers lost in the past decade.

Today marks the first day of National Police Week, which allows citizens the opportunity to honor America's law enforcement community.

"They understand that this job of law enforcement is not just a profession, but a calling", he said.

About 50 members of law enforcement, city officials and residents turned out to the ceremony at the Woodstock Memorial as part of National Police Week. Some of the surviving family members accompanied the officers.

The annual ceremony at the memorial in their honor will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Attorney General Gordon MacDonald will be reading the roll of honor, recognizing the names of the state's 48 fallen police officers.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard delivered the keynote speech at the Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony at the Pierre Church of Christ on Wednesday morning, to honor law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. President Trump's plan to improve the lives of law enforcement officers and their families is admirable. "During National Law Enforcement Week, please take the time to say thank you to the fearless men and women working hard across this nation, each and every day, to bring safety and security to your communities".

"Our service is always the Friday of National Police Week", said BPD officer Stewart Beasley. A memorial service was held in Lafayette for friends, family, and colleagues of the fallen.

I am very thankful for the diligence and service of the law enforcement officers of the 1st District of Tennessee and around the country, and I greatly respect the way they courageously defend our communities.

Bullhead City Police Chief Brian Williamson also used a personal connection to describe what the occasion means to him.

We must do all that we can to support our police brothers and sisters, to help reduce the senseless violence that too often takes their lives, and to help ensure that their lives have not been in vain.
