In Debate Prep, Hillary Clinton Practiced Dodging Trump's Weird Macho Hugs

Darin HammondMay 20, 2017

Trump's tendency to force hugs upon those he comes into contact with has recent come into the spotlight because of James Comey, the fired FBI Director who reportedly felt uncomfortable at meetings with the President and did not want to appear too close to him. Comey's associates told reporters that he tried to avoid directly interacting with Trump months ago, and that he did not appreciate it when the president singled him out and pulled him in for a hug during a gathering. But he wanted to approximate his physicality so that Clinton would grow accustomed to Trump's looming presence when she saw Reines in her peripheral vision.

The video, filmed on September 24, 2016, just two days before the first presidential debate, shows Clinton practicing for her meeting with then-candidate Donald Trump, facing off against a staffer standing in for her opponent. One Twitter commenter asked Reines if the video shows Clinton herself or a stand-in, to which he responded, "That's her, in the flesh".

Anyway, it's nice to see Clinton and Reines taking a moment to laugh and enjoy themselves, instead of, say, campaigning in Wisconsin.

Reines, a longtime Clinton aide with a reportedly sharp disposition, really got into the act when it came time to portray then-candidate Trump in debate prep.

It's one of Trump's well-known maneuvers, seemingly meant to turn a handshake into a judo-inspired show of dominance.

President Trump shook hands with FBI Director James B. Comey during a law enforcement reception at the White House on January 22.

"Not easy to avoid the unwanted Trump hug, sometimes it even takes practice", Reines tweeted. Trump joked that Comey has "become more famous than me".
