Macron, Merkel vow to give Europe a new impetus

And on Monday, he appointed prime minister Edouard Philippe, a centre-right politician like Merkel, who is said to be fluent in German.

A large group of onlookers, some carrying European flags, stood outside the chancellery as Mr Macron arrived.

The statement was a clear nod to Germany, which has been vigorously opposing the idea of taking responsibility for the debts of weaker, crisis-hit European Union member states.

Paris: France's centrist President Emmanuel Macron named his government on Wednesday, appointing a mix of political hues to the top jobs as part of his promise to bridge the right-left divide.

Emmanuel Macron's support for the Paris bid is seen as symbolically important, and his decision to meet Tuesday with the visiting International Olympic Committee delegation was one of his first moves since taking office Sunday.

Macron had promised to include figures from civil society in his government.

It projected that, after the second round on June 18, Macron's party would have secured 280-300 of the 535 mainland seats in the lower house.

Macron, a newcomer to worldwide diplomacy, put counter-terrorism at the top of his security priorities during the election campaign, vowing to strengthen support for West African allies.

But not everyone was pleased with the Philippe announcement.

But the proposals have sent alarm bells ringing in Berlin and initial relief about his victory against far-right leader Marine Le Pen had quickly given way to fears about his reform plans.

Ms. Merkel said she and Mr. Macron had agreed to "develop anew" their bilateral relationship and that their cabinet ministers would meet shortly after the French parliamentary election in June.

Having elected him president, they would then give him a majority to govern, he predicted.

Macron, the fervently pro-European centrist sworn in as head of state on Sunday, in keeping with tradition made his first trip overseas to Berlin, its "power couple" partner in the heart of the European project.

Mr Macron previously met Mrs Merkel when he visited Berlin in March as a candidate.

Merkel cited the urgency to act at a "critical moment" as the European Union confronts a series of crises in addition to Britain's exit. "Germany will only do well in the long-term if Europe does well and Europe will only do well if there is a strong France.", said Angela Merkel the German Chancellor.

EDF shares, which were down 2.5 per cent at 9.23 euros just before the announcement, fell further and stood almost five percent down on the day following the news of Mr Hulot's nomination. Macron wants deeper security cooperation with Europe, but he may find it hard to break the mould of predecessors Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy.

Germany is keen to continue the Franco-German diplomatic drive to keep a lid on the situation in Ukraine, where Russia-backed separatists are battling the government.

Mr. Macron also called on the European Union to toughen its policies against countries that flout the rules of worldwide trade.
