'Scarface' Reboot Movie Has David Ayer Attached as Director!

Elbert EdwardsMay 20, 2017

Ayer, who won acclaim penning the hard-hitting Training Day and making gritty movies such as End of Watch, is in talks to direct Universal's Scarface, which is trading in its Miami locale for the streets of L.A.

According to the report, this remake will take inspiration from both previous Scarface movies but will be set in Los Angeles instead.

A few weeks ago, we brought you the news that Rogue One star Diego Luna was going to pick up Tony Montana's chainsaw and mountain of cocaine, but it appears that the remake of a remake of a remake has found its director.

Ayer recently wrote and directed "Suicide Squad", which starred Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Cara Delevingne and and Viola Davis.

The film has been slated for a 2018 release and originally had Antoine Fuqua in the mix to direct. Fuqua, however, left the conversation due to scheduling conflicts. Plus, it presumably keeps him away from Gotham City Sirens, a film I'd much rather see someone else - anyone else - step in to direct.

Ok, Suicide Squad was pretty woeful but Ayer seems like he could be a good fit for the material. It's the second remake of the immigrant drug lord classic: The first version of the film debuted in 1932, and was remade in 1983 by Brian DePalma, starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Dylan Clark of War for the Planet of the Apes is on board to produce the film with Scott Stuber of Netflix and the 1983 film's producer Martin Bregman.
